Tips for Decorating Large Windows

Tips for decorating large windows

Hunter Douglas Nantucket™ window shadings

Large windows are a stunning focal point for any space, but come night, it can feel like you’re living in a fishbowl. Your evening activities vividly on display for any passerby or a nosy neighbor. Unfortunately, covering these windows can be a decorating challenge. Windows that run floor to ceiling (especially those over a story tall) are often too large for standard-sized window treatments, requiring a custom solution. And if your windows are stacked, the windows closest to the ceiling will be hard-to-reach, making daily operation and DIY installation difficult.

Looking for a window treatment solution for your large windows? Follow these expert tips to choose a style that will provide privacy without detracting from the view.

Enhance with drapery

Similar to the effect the stage curtain has on a performance, drapery side panels help frame the windows, enhancing their design impact by forcing the eye to focus on the main event – the view. Choosing sheer or neutral fabrics over a bolder style ensures your window treatments will fade into the background, providing privacy without competing with your large windows as the focal point.

Designer tip: The taller the windows, the wider your panels will need to be to achieve optimal fullness. Otherwise, your windows will look like they’re flanked by skinny pieces of fabric.

Blend in with shades

If your large windows have enough space to place a bracket, then window shades are another great window treatment style for large window expanses. Like drapery, it’s important to keep your fabric and color selection neutral so when drawn, the shades don’t visually overpower your space and décor. Designer Roller Shades are a classic style, offering a clean, modern look when drawn. For an eye-catching, sculptural look at the window, choose Pirouette® window shadings.

Designer tip: Maintain a clean, streamlined look by installing a valance that matches your window frame or casing, that way your shade will appear as if it’s part of the window and all operating components are hidden from view.

Choose Motorization

If your window expanse is more than one story tall, manually operating your window treatments can be difficult as cords and wands are out of reach. This is why it’s important to choose motorization for your tall windows, allowing you to control the position of your blinds and shades with the touch of a button.

Designer tip: For the most advanced operating system on the market, choose PowerView® Motorization from Hunter Douglas. In addition to being able to easily operate window treatments on demand by remote, smartphone or tablet, you can also automate the task enabling blinds or shades to move on their own throughout the day so you don’t have to.

Cover the bottom and not the top

If your windows are stacked, covering the upper windows may not be necessary at all, especially if privacy isn’t a big concern compared to windows at eye level. Luminette® Privacy Sheers are a great vertical window treatment style for windows that are both tall and wide and feature soft drapery-like folds.

Designer tip: Choosing a sheer fabric provides the perfect balance of privacy and view-through, completely blocking visibility from the street but views to the outside are clear.
